True World Cup spirit

In an age of multi millionaire footballer ad's and pre World Cup hype, I came across this little story which I think would make a beautiful Film or commercial.

This image was shot onto a glass plate, and was one of the few surviving photographs as most were destroyed due to the fact they were too heavy to carry.

After the Norwegian Amundsen (December 1911) and Scott (January 1912) had reached the South Pole, Shackleton thought up and attempted to carry out another great plan - to cross the 2000 mile Antarctic continent.

This trip was a very successful failure. The team of 28 men and 68 dogs never set foot on the continent Shackleton's ship the "Endurance"was trapped in the ice (see behind the goal, they actually stripped wood from the boat to make the goal! not quite "Jumpers for Goalposts")

In January 1915 it was squashed and sank by the pressure of the ice, leaving 28 men on the ice with 3 small ship's boats. They then spent 5 ( admittedly summer) months on an iceberg floating away from the continent.

Even though food supplies were low, they were cold and isolated, not knowing if they would live or die, what did they do to pass the time?,... what any group of blokes would do in their situation...

have a kickabout.
